How to make one
- Enter the name and IBAN. The name on the account and its IBAN, with or without spaces. We check the IBAN's own check digits, so a mistyped one is caught before you print.
- Add an amount and a reference, if you like. Leave the amount empty to let the payer type it. A reference, like an invoice number, travels with the transfer to your statement. An RF creditor reference works too.
- Leave the BIC empty, usually. Inside the SEPA area banks find the bank from the IBAN. Add the BIC only if your bank asks for it.
- Download and test. Scan the code with your own banking app and check that the name, IBAN and amount fill in correctly, before you print or send it.
What's inside the code
An EPC QR code, the format the European Payments Council set for SEPA credit transfers (EPC069-12), known in Germany as GiroCode. It holds the name, IBAN, amount and reference as plain text, so the payer's banking app can fill in the transfer. It's made in your browser, so your IBAN isn't sent to us, and QR Code Spot never sees or handles the payment.
Where it works
It's a transfer in euro inside the SEPA area. Most banking apps in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland read these codes; support in other countries varies by bank. If a payer's app can't read it, they can still type the details printed next to the code, so print the IBAN and name too.
Check it before printing
- Copy the IBAN from your banking app or statement rather than typing it from memory.
- The payer's app shows the name before they confirm. Use the name on the account, so the bank's name check matches.
- An amount inside the code can't be changed after printing. For changing prices, leave it empty.
- Keep printed codes where you can see them, so nobody can stick another code over yours.
The code follows the European Payments Council's QR guidelines (EPC069-12). QR Code Spot isn't connected with the European Payments Council or with any bank.
Questions
Is this SEPA QR code generator free?
Yes, with a free account and no card. There are no fees from us, and the code doesn't expire.
Is this the same as a GiroCode?
Yes. GiroCode is the name German banks use for the EPC QR code. It's one standard, read by banking apps across the euro area.
Can I use it on invoices?
Yes. Make one per invoice with the amount and the invoice number as the reference, then add the image to the invoice, ideally next to the IBAN in plain text.
Does it work for accounts outside the euro area?
Only for IBANs from SEPA countries, and the transfer is always in euro. Outside SEPA, use your bank's own payment link or a Link code.
Does the BIC matter?
Inside SEPA, banks find the bank from the IBAN, so it's optional. Add it only if your bank asks for it.
